Avengers: Doomsday new footage wins over fans after ‘underwhelming’ first trailer: ‘Bazillion times better’

The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday just dropped – and fans are breathing a big sigh of relief.

Marvel fans got a better look at the forthcoming superhero film when an extended trailer premiered at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday (25 July), following the release of an “underwhelming” first clip last week.

The directors and cast took over the venue, including Doctor Doom star Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans who is reprising his role as Captain America after a seven-year absence.

All eyes, however, were on the new footage, which begins with Downey Jr’s Von Doom sitting on a throne as voiceover from Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm explains: “Victor was always the smartest guy in the room. He used to be different. He used to be kind. He used to be caring… Everything he loved was taken from him. I knew he was lost, and I did not realise that he was broken.”

It’s worth noting that the trailer emphasises Doom’s relationship with the Fantastic Four, making it clear that Pedro Pascal’s Mr Fantastic and the rest of the group have a troubled pre-existing relationship with the villain.

As reported by Variety, the trailer leans into the film’s massive crossover appeal with fleeting scenes of characters across the MCU: Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Panther (Letitia Wright), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Cyclops (James Marsden), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Gambit (Channing Tatum) and more.

Following a shot of New York City reduced to rubble, Mr Fantastic questions whether Doom is responsible. The trailer then cuts to Doom’s chilling line: “All of you have lived stolen lives. You refuse to give them back,” offering viewers a taste of Downey Jr’s Eastern European accent in the role.

Fans also got a glimpse of Doom’s army of Sentinel robots, the androids from the X-Men movies, which he unleashes upon Thor in the trailer.

The footage was shown only to Hall H attendees at Comic-Con and is not yet available online. It follows the release of a first trailer last week.

Fans who have seen both appear to prefer the second, with many questioning why Marvel didn’t lead with it.

“OK the second Doomsday trailer is so much better than the first,” wrote one person on X, with another echoing the same sentiment: “Why wasn’t this the first Doomsday trailer cause it’s way better than whatever that slop first trailer was.”

Calling out “Marvel’s weird judgement”, a third person wrote: “[The second trailer] hit infinitely better than the one they released to the public. A lot of people I know who didn’t like the first one loved this one.”

“The SDCC [San Diego Comic Con] trailer for Avengers Doomsday is legitimately so much better than the trailer they released online,” wrote someone else.

“Doomsday trailer 2 is so much better than the underwhelming trailer that we saw a few days back,” said another, with others agreeing that the second clip is “50 bazillion times better than the one they released last week”.

The forthcoming film, the first in a two-part Avengers finale, will feature almost every major character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in cinemas on 18 December.

In other superhero-related news at Comic-Con, David Jonsson was unmasked as the new Black Panther. The British actor will take the lead in the forthcoming third entry of the franchise.
