Three is a trend, and so we can now say, with confidence, that baby bangs are so back. Last night, Dakota Johnson attended the Kering Foundation Caring for Women Dinner in New York City with her signature bangs trimmed shorter than ever—more than an inch above her brows. Johnson marks the third celebrity in recent weeks to step out wearing micro fringe. Zendaya wore the style to a Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiere back in July, while Chase Sui Wonders wore choppy baby bangs to the Venice Film Festival at the top of the month.

Love them or loathe them, baby bangs are about to be everywhere this fall. "I'm obsessed with baby, micro fringe," celebrity hairstylist Christopher Naselli previously told Bazaar. "It's the perfect way to make your haircut modern and open up your face. It's an edgy statement, but yet super soft."

The mark of a baby bang, versus just a short, blunt bang, is if the hair stops well above the brows. The bangs should lie flat against the forehead, with the sides swept toward the temples to create a flattering shape. To achieve this, you really only need one tool: creaseless hair clips. You can use them after heat styling or air-drying to help the bangs hold their shape throughout the day, especially if you have cowlicks.

Baby bangs are a great way to draw attention to your brows, eyes, and cheekbones, and they work on all hair lengths, from bobs to extra-long layers. But if you don’t have the patience to style them daily—or keep up with regular trims—then put down the scissors. This is one hair trend that looks cool and effortless but, like any baby, requires extra love and care.
