At the Los Angeles premiere of Club Kid, Cara Delevingne tells PEOPLE that queer nightlife is the ā€œfirst placeā€ she ā€œfound real belongingā€

The model stars in the upcoming A24 film, Jordan Firstman’s first movie as a writer, director and actor

Cara Delevingne is opening up about how the queer party scene helped her embrace her sexuality.

At the Los Angeles premiere of A24’s Club Kid on Wednesday, Nov. 4, the model and actress, 34, said that nightclubs were instrumental to her feeling welcomed into the queer community.

ā€œIt was the first place I found real belonging,ā€ she tells PEOPLE. ā€œWhen I would just go out, I would feel like I would have to cosplay as being straight or whatever. There was an element of that, especially if you’re not even in the community, but you’re an ally, to be able to go out in that community. It is one of the most accepting places in the world.ā€

Delevingne stars in Club Kid, Jordan Firstman’s first movie as a writer, director and actor.

On Wednesday, Aug. 19, Firstman, 35, and A24 debuted the movie’s trailer, in which Firstman portrays a New York City man ensconced in the nightlife scene whose life is changed forever when he learns he is actually a father to a 10-year-old son, portrayed by child actor Reggie Absolom.

In April, Delevingne launched her music career by announcing a tour and sharing clips of her songs ā€œI Forgotā€ and ā€œOut of My Headā€ on social media. Her debut album, Not Normal, was released in September.

In a Playboy cover story interview published on Tuesday, July 14, the model and musician opened up about why she didn’t want people to know she was the person behind the music.

ā€œOriginally, I wanted to release the music under a different name so no one would know it was me, because I just wanted it to go out there,ā€ Delevingne told the publication. ā€œBut I didn’t want the preconceived ideas—how many people are going to say it’s bad without even listening to it?ā€

She added: ā€œOf course, I accept that—people might think it’s bad whether they know or care if it’s me or not. But that’s not why I’ve done it.ā€
