Heather Rae El Moussa is opening up about how she has changed since her home was burglarized.
The Southern California residence where the HGTV and Selling Sunset star, 38, lives with her husband Tarek El Moussa and their family was broken into while they were on vacation in early June. Over a month later, she told E! News that she has become more wary about what she shares with the world in the wake of the ādevastatingā event.
āItās hard because my life is out there,ā Heather told the outlet at a Karma Automotive event at Los Angelesā Petersen Automotive Museum on Saturday, July 25 ā about seven weeks after the burglary shook her family. (Heather shares a son Tristan, 3, with Tarek, and is stepmother to her husbandās older children ā daughter Taylor, 15, and son Brayden, 10 ā from his previous marriage to Christina Haack.)
āIām on a reality show and Iāve been sharing my life for so long. And you want to share your life,ā Heather told the outlet, adding that she wants āpeople to follow along the journey.ā
That being said, her philosophy about sharing parts of her life online has changed since the break-in, the reality star admitted. āItās definitely made me cautious and made me nervous,ā she shared. āYou donāt think itās going to happen to you, and it does. And it was really devastating.ā

āTime has passed, like a little bit of time, but it definitely was really hard on us, hard on the family,ā Heather told E! News. āYour home is your sanctuary, and we were gone. And unfortunately, I posted in real time, so I learned from the mistakes, and theyāre all lessons.ā
The incident, she said, has āmade us really focus and figure out upping everything at our house and being extra safe.ā

Tarek, 44, and Heatherās Orange County, Calif., home was burglarized while the couple was on vacation with their family in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The incident occurred between 7:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, June 6, and 6 p.m. local time on Monday, June 8, the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD) previously confirmed to PEOPLE.
The NBPD told PEOPLE that āunknown suspects accessed the backyard of the property and shattered a rear sliding glass door to get into the house.ā
āInside the residence, the suspects ransacked the primary bedroom closet before fleeing through the backyard, along the side of the house and out the front yard,ā the department said at the time.
In a joint statement shared in the wake of the burglary, Tarek and Heather revealed that āirreplaceable family heirlooms and special memoriesā were taken from the property. The NBPD also confirmed that jewelry was stolen from the property.
No additional information has been released about the suspects. Speaking with E! News on Saturday, however, Heather said that officials are āworking on stuff.ā
