Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that they would love to finally be in a movie together

“It’s got to [happen],” Kate said of acting with her Oscar-winning mother in a potential film project in the future

Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson are both eager to film a movie together.

The mother and daughter — who have never starred in the same project — expressed their mutual desire to finally act together while speaking with PEOPLE in an exclusive conversation ahead of a Q&A tied to Kate's latest movie, Song Sung Blue, in Los Angeles on Jan. 13.

“Oh, yes! I don’t know what,” Goldie, 80, said about a potential joint film.

Kate, 46, added, “I hope so! It’s got to! I might have to go disappear into the mountains somewhere and just write it myself.”

Before the Q&A at the AMC The Grove 15, Goldie also gushed about her daughter’s career and acting skills in Song Sung Blue — in which Kate and Hugh Jackman, 57, play members of a Neil Diamond tribute band.

“We’re so deeply, deeply proud — not a word I use very often — but I’m in awe of Kate, and I think we all are,” the Oscar-winning actress (for Cactus Flower) said of her daughter. “Kate’s her own thing. … I was lucky to carry this little one in my belly and bring her to the world, and that’s what I’m grateful for. She never stops to surprise me or any of us with her talent.”

The Death Becomes Her star continued of Kate's acting prowess, “It’s instinct. It isn’t learning. We all live together. We’re a family together. And we have genetics that are very similar. … We learn by example. We don't learn by oration, rhetoric, none of that.”

“Kate obviously comes from two people who make movies, and with that, you see how we behaved,” Goldie added.

Goldie welcomed Kate into the world in 1979 with then-husband, musician and actor Bill Hudson. After they finalized their divorce in 1982, Goldie started dating current partner Kurt Russell, 74, in 1983 — with Kate considering him to be her stepdad for more than four decades now.

The matriarch also said their family tries to balance acting with daily life.

“It’s balance — your life, your family, your kids, your things you want to do and you care about. Books that we’re reading, we share that,” Goldie emphasized. “There’s a lot of other things in life that are meaningful.”

The First Wives Club star concluded, “Our work is part of what we do, and it isn’t who we are, and those are two different things.”
