Kate Walsh and Amy Brenneman are still close friends after costarring in Private Practice
“We became sisters from another mister on our television program together,” Walsh told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview
The Grey’s Anatomy star also teased whether the pair will ever share the screen again
It’s been nearly 20 years since Private Practicepremiered, but Kate Walsh and Amy Brenneman are still thick as thieves.
Speaking with PEOPLE exclusively at The Center at West Park’s staged reading of The Big Chillon Aug. 31, Walsh said Brenneman “is my bestie.”
“We stay in touch. We’re good buddies,” the actress, 58, continued of her former costar. “We became sisters from another mister on our television program together and then always have stayed close.”
Walsh also said that she “would love” to someday share the screen with Brenneman, 62, again.

Walsh and Brenneman costarred in all six seasons of the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff. In the medical drama, which aired from 2007 to 2013, Walsh reprised her role as Dr. Addison Montgomery and Brenneman played Dr. Violet Turner.
Their characters were close friends and workers at a private medical center, but they also faced a few major obstacles throughout the series.
Over the years, the two stars have remained in each other’s lives. In 2022, Walsh was on an Instagram Live with Brenneman when she revealed that she was engaged to Andrew Nixon.
Before, in 2015, Brenneman told PEOPLE that the Private Practice cast was reuniting to go to makeup artist Sergio Lopez-Rivera’s destination wedding.
“So it’s me, and Kate Walsh, and Taye Diggs and Paul [Adelstein], and there’s a whole bunch of Private Practice folks that are going to be partying their asses off in Northern Spain,” she said at the time.

The special reading of The Big Chill at The Guild Hall in East Hampton, N.Y., had an all-star cast, including Brenneman, Matthew Broderick, Ayo Edebiri, Marisa Tomei, Josh Hamilton and Dylan Walsh.
Brenneman shared her love for Walsh in an Instagram post after the staged reading.
The Judging Amy alum posted photos from the night, including a selfie with Walsh and two others, writing, “What a joy to gather with badass actors and read a badass screenplay to support a badass community art space.”
She added, “Any night with @katewalsh and @andynix1 is a good night.”

The staged reading, directed by David Saint, was in support of The Center at West Park and its preservation of the West Park Presbyterian Church in New York City.
“This is an important thing,” Walsh told PEOPLE. ”Number one, it is important to save this building. And number two, live performances are critical. That’s what I love. That’s what brings people together.”
Brenneman also spoke about supporting the nonprofit and its mission to uplift emerging artists.
“When you’re just starting out, you need people, you need spaces and you need resources. It’s hard, and there’s going to be all sorts of reasons to give up. I think that whatever support we can give is very important,” she said.
