Mel Brooks stepped out for a rare public outing in Hollywood.
On Sunday, Nov. 1, the 100-year-old EGOT winner behind classic films like The Producers and Blazing Saddles made a rare public appearance in Hollywood, Calif., during which he donned a black suit and Spaceballs baseball cap.
More than five decades after becoming a household name, the film director has been working on reprising his fan-favorite role as Yogurt in Spaceballs: The New One, the upcoming sequel to the 1987 classic comedy.
During a Melrose Place panel at 90s Con in October, actress Daphne Zuniga revealed that Brooks filmed his part in the film before some of the other stars even got to set.

“It was his idea: ‘You better film me now because I’m 100,’ ” she recalled. “So we did.”
In the HBO documentary Mel Brooks: The 99-Year-Old Man!, which was released in January, the actor’s son, Maximillian “Max” Brooks, referred to the latest chapter in his dad’s life as a “wonderful fourth or fifth act.”
“There’s now all of this interest in redoing his former projects,” Max said. “He’s having this amazing career renaissance.”

As for how Brooks has stayed “healthy and happy” throughout his decades-long career? He told PEOPLE earlier this year that “laughing” plays a huge role in getting him out of bed every morning.
“It’s an amazing sound, people laughing at something I created,” he said in January. “Making comedy is a great job. It keeps you sane and happy. It gives you a reason to be alive.”

In celebration of Brooks’ 100th birthday in June, the American Film Institute (AFI) made an official amendment to its ‘100 Years… 100 Laughs’ list, moving Blazing Saddles from sixth place to first place.
“We’re happy to right this wrong as Mel celebrates his centennial,” Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, said at the time. “It’s good to be the king, and may he live to be a 2,000-year-old man. Happy birthday, Mel!’ “
Beyond spreading laughter, Brooks told PEOPLE that courage, a trait he inherited from his mother, also played a key role in helping him navigate his years in the spotlight.
The youngest of four boys, the comedian was born Melvin Kaminsky on June 28, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Max and Kate Kaminsky. His father died when Brooks was just 2 years old, leaving Kate to raise the boys alone.
“She was an amazing example of courage,” he said of his mom. “Losing her husband when she was just a young gal, raising four kids. What an example of a courageous life.”
