- “I do connect with him every now and again, because he’s amazing,” Bloom tells EW, adding that he asks about more *Pirates *“all the time.”

- Bloom spoke about with EW about the swashbuckling franchise at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, which he attended to premiere his bizarre new drama, *Bucking Fastard.*

“I ask that all the time,” Bloom tells * *at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, which Bloom attended in support of his unusual new drama, *Bucking Fastard*.

It’s been nine years since the release of a new *Pirates *movie, and the fandom asking for more hasn’t grown any quieter. But the high-profile, years-long legal battle Depp was embroiled in with his ex, Amber Heard, has cast doubt on the ability to revive the beloved franchise. Still, Bloom thinks a full *Pirates *family reunion is possible.

“I do connect with [Depp] every now and again, because he’s amazing,” Bloom says. “But I think, it’s like, that was so fun and it was such a zeitgeist-y thing. I mean, I don’t know how they do it or when they do it, but I haven’t heard.”

Bloom praises the *Pirates *cast, which also included Keira Knightley, Kevin McNally, and Geoffrey Rush, as “a really good group of people.” So why have we almost gone a decade without a new entry?

“I don’t know. I think nostalgia is such a big thing in the world today. So we keep harking back to these things, because of the nostalgia and what the feeling you had watching whatever your favorite thing was,” he says. “There’s that kind of thing that I think we’re seeing in movies as well. So we’ll see.”

Bloom, Depp, and Knightley formed the core, super-starry cast of the original *Pirates* film, based on the Disney theme park attraction. Bloom played the dashing blacksmith Will Turner, who teams up with the eccentric pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) to save his forever love, Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) from a gang of raucous, rival pirates.

The trio’s seafaring adventures extended for three more films (the franchise’s fourth entry, *Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides *featured Depp but no Knightley or Bloom) before both Depp and Rush were waylaid by legal troubles.

Rush was accused of behaving inappropriately toward actress Eryn Jean Norvill in a series of 2017 articles in *The Daily Telegraph*. In 2019, he took the paper to court for defamation and won $600,000.

Depp, meanwhile, was accused of domestic violence by his ex, Amber Heard, in 2016, following her filing for both a restraining order and divorce. They reached a settlement and obtained a divorce the following year, but in 2018, Depp filed a defamation suit against *The Sun *for calling him a “wife beater” (he lost that case in 2020), and then filed a defamation suit against Heard for a 2018 *Washington Post* op-ed she wrote, in which she described herself as a survivor of domestic abuse, though she didn’t name Depp.

Depp won that case in 2022, though the jury also ruled in favor of one of Heard’s counterclaims.

As for *Pirates*, producer Jerry Bruckheimer similarly signaled that Depp would return for more, and Bloom previously stated that he believes a sixth film would only work with “everybody back.”
