During the pandemic, Pete Davidson had a "weird hunch" that VHS tapes would "be worth billions of dollars"

"I had a lot of fun during COVID and bought 10,000 VHS tapes — sealed," the comedian admitted

He now looks back at that time as a reminder to "not do drugs"

Pete Davidson will be the first to admit that he's made some interesting decisions.

During an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, Jan. 26, the comedian, 32, was raving about how much he loves his minivan, especially now that he's a dad, and he gave host Jimmy Fallon an update on his "extensive" VHS collection.

When Fallon, 51, asked if Davidson was keeping up with his collecting, the comedian confirmed that he is, and then gave the audience the backstory.

He added a changing table and a VHS player to his car

"Last time I was here, a while ago, I had this weird hunch that VHSes would be worth billions of dollars," Davidson said. "I had a lot of fun during COVID and bought 10,000 VHS tapes — sealed."

Because the VHS tapes he purchased during the pandemic were sealed, Davidson said he was convinced they were "gonna go for millions."

Instead, "they went down so much," he said. "But I get to look at them every day as a reminder not to do drugs."

Davidson has been candid throughout his career about his journey with drug addiction, and has undergone treatment multiple times to address both his addiction and his borderline personality disorder and severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

Davidson decked out his minivan in partnership with eBay last year, as he worked with builder Tony Angelo to create the ultimate ā€œdad vanā€ that features not only a VHS player but a mini fridge and a bottle warmer for his daughter, Scottie, who he welcomed with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt on Dec. 12, 2025.

ā€œI personally love minivans,ā€ he told PEOPLE on the set of his eBay shoot. ā€œI don't think there's anything wrong with them or the stigma that comes with one. I had one before I was having a baby.ā€

ā€œI'm taking it everywhere. I'm not just going to use it to be a dad, this thing is sick,ā€ he said. ā€œI already hate my current car. Look at it, it's so cool.ā€

The Saturday Night Live alum also admitted that he had used eBay particularly often to fuel his VHS collection habit.

ā€œThe amount of VHS, weird Burger King watches from the '90s that I've ordered and VHS TVs,ā€ he admitted. "[I use] eBay all the time."

After Davidson and Hewitt, 29, welcomed their daughter, a source told PEOPLE that the couple is "settling into a rhythm, taking everything day by day and just enjoying getting to know their daughter."

"It's been a lot of firsts, but it's a really happy, exciting time for both of them," the source said. "They're very much in it together. They're both learning as they go, supporting each other and feeling grateful as they step into this new chapter as parents."
