Pierce Brosnan on the next James Bond: ‘I’ve said too much’

Pierce Brosnan has shared his thoughts on who the next James Bond will be, saying there are “lots of good hats in the ring” for the highly-coveted role.

The 73-year-old actor famously played 007 in four films between 1995 and 2002: GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day.

He was then replaced by Daniel Craig, who delivered his final performance as the spy in 2021’s No Time to Die. And with the next Bond said to have been cast,Brosnan has weighed in on the battle for the role.

He told The Times: “I’m just a member of the audience now awaiting the next Bond and wishing him well.

“There are lots of good hats in the ring. Lots of great actors. I see it. I follow it. They could probably just go left-field and pick someone that none of us know about.”

But when asked to give an example, he replied: “I wouldn’t pick anyone. My wife told me not to say anything and I’ve said too much. Because once I say something it goes [everywhere] and I get hanged.”

Some famous faces have been less guarded when it comes to revealing their preferred Bond and naming the actors who have allegedly impressed producers.

Brosnan’s comments come just weeks after The Rest Is Entertainment host Richard Osman claimed Jack Lowden “is definitely being strongly considered”.

“I think Jack Lowden would be an incredible Bond,” he said on the podcast. “He’s got real Daniel Craig energy.”

The actor, who is best known for playing River Cartwright in Slow Horses, is currently the bookies’ favourite too, with Ladbrokes offering odds of 4/6 on him landing the role.

Masters of the Air star Callum Turner is second favourite, with odds of 5/2, while Wuthering Heights actor Jacob Elordi is 12/1.

Normal People star Paul Mescal, who will play Paul McCartney in Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles films, is 16/1 for the role and odds of 20/1 are being offered on The White Lotus actor Theo James getting the part.

Speaking toThe Independent back in June, casting director Debbie McWilliams, who helped select previous Bond actors including Timothy Dalton, Brosnan and Craig, said that “it is absolutely essential that [Bond] retains a total enigma”.

“I don’t want to see [Elordi, Turner, et al] as Bond because we now know so much about them,” she added. “We want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that’s what spies are.

“We don’t where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives … He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost the audience.”

Gary Oldman claimed this week that producers have already decided who will be the next James Bond – and says that his “fingers are crossed” for one name to emerge.

TheSlow Horsesactor, 68, threw his support behind his co-star Lowden while speaking to Canada’s The Morning Show. Oldman said that he believed an announcement was coming “soon” and that the franchise bosses had “made their choice” already.

Steven Knight, who is writing the new film, seemed to back Oldman’s claim as he said the script was proving easier to write now he knew who was playing Bond.
