A pilot’s haunting final words have been revealed after a small plane bound for The Bahamas crashed in a South Florida neighborhood over the weekend, killing all nine people on board.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed to PEOPLE that the crash occurred at around 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, Nov. 1, in a residential area near Cresthaven, Fla.

The Learjet 60 — a mid-sized business jet that typically seats about eight people — had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in The Bahamas when the crash occurred, the FAA said.

Details of the emergency call made shortly before the crash have now been released, with the pilot radioing, “We’re descending 8,000 – mayday, mayday — we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute,” per the .

“We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute,” the pilot said, adding, “We’re going to crash into the ground,” according to the news agency.

The last words heard from the cockpit were, “We’re out of time,” around 35 seconds after the initial mayday announcement was made, Sky News reported.

Minutes before the tragedy occurred, the pilot had reported ice accumulating on the aircraft, stating that it was jolting as much as 700 feet due to turbulence, per the AP, which cited air traffic recordings obtained by LiveATC.net.

The pilot told controllers, “We have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence,” according to the news agency. The situation quickly deteriorated.

Harrowing video footage of the incident showed the plane hitting the ground in a fiery crash, leaving a large crater in the ground and causing fires to spring up all around the site, PEOPLE previously reported.

There were no immediate reports suggesting anybody on the ground had been injured or killed, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said, according to the AP.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy called the crash a “horrific tragedy” in a post shared on X on Sunday, confirming that all nine people on board had been killed, and that the FAA was sending a team to the scene to support the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB) investigation.

“Please join me in praying for the families and loved ones of those we lost,” Duffy wrote.

The identities of those on board have not yet been released.

DeSantis told reporters at the scene, “It was a cataclysmic plane crash. It looked like a missile going down and left a big crater on the side of the road,” per the AP.

It’s not yet known what caused the jet to go down, the news agency reported.

Moments before the plane dove, a request had been made to climb another 2,000 feet, the AP stated. The plane had been heading east at 35,000 feet, when pilots reported they’d been experiencing turbulence, icing and precipitation.

Around 600 people were evacuated from a nearby mobile home community following the crash amid the ongoing investigation, Palm Beach County authorities said, per the AP. The road on which the crash occurred is closed and will be until further notice.

The NTSB did not immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information.
