Former Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, staged a political comeback Tuesday, Nov. 3, defeating Republican Sen. Jon Husted in Ohio's U.S. Senate race, helping Democrats gain control of Congress.
Brown defeated Husted, Libertarian Bill Redpath and independent Greg Levy, according to unofficial results. Brown's victory came two years after he lost a reelection bid to Sen. Bernie Moreno and JD Vance won the vice presidency, opening up a Senate seat that was never supposed to be in play this year.
"This is your victory," Brown told supporters gathered in Columbus. "Corporations, billionaires tried to buy this election, but it turns out there’s a whole lot more of us than there are of them."
So when will Brown be sworn in? Since this was a special election, it could be earlier than the rest of Congress. Here's what to know.

When will Sherrod Brown be sworn in? Possible dates to enter Senate
Gov. Mike DeWine appointed Husted to replace Vance in the Senate in early 2025. However, a special election was required because of how much time was left in Vance's term, which ends in 2029. Brown will serve the remaining 2 years.
Under state law, Husted will leave office on Dec. 15. Brown could be sworn in as early as that date, as Senate rules allow those who win a special election to take their seats as soon as the vote is certified and sent along to the Senate.
Normally, senators and congressional representatives who win on Election Day in November are sworn into office on the first day of the new session, Jan. 3. However, since the Brown vs. Husted race was to fill the unexpired term of JD Vance, who resigned as senator when he was elected vice president, Brown might be able to take the seat early.
However, as of Nov. 4, it is unclear the exact date Brown will be sworn in.
Brown's campaign had not yet responded to inquiries about his swearing-in date when this story published.
