Despite being part of the British royal family and future monarchs of the nation, Prince William and Kate Middleton have often made headlines for their unconventional parenting.
Former reports suggest strict home rules devoid of royal privileges, and the couple’s desire to prioritize emotional etiquette ahead of their kids’ academic success or royal status.
However, according to new revelations from royal historian Robert Lacey, the Prince and Princess of Wales wanted a pressure-free childhood for Prince George, given the responsibilities associated with his potential title.
Prince William Knows ‘The Weight of the Crown’
Given how Prince William and Kate Middleton want their kids to experience as much normalcy as possible for royal children, historian Robert Lacey told Peoplethat the couple waited years to inform Prince George about his potential future title.
Since all three of their children are expected to have royal duties and responsibilities quite early in life, the couple want them to enjoy a pressure-free childhood, especially their oldest son, Prince George, who will follow his father’s path to the throne.
Being the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales, the 13-year-old is expected to become the future Prince of Wales, and eventually become the King of the U.K.
According to Lacey, since Prince William knows the “weight of the crown” too well, he and his wife waited to break the news to their son until he was about seven years old. He further added that the conversation was full of “special care and thoughtfulness.”

Further, royal biographer Robert Hardman said, “William takes his role as father of the future king as seriously as he takes his role as future king. That’s key. His overarching priority is making sure they enjoy it rather than fear it.”
Strict Rules at Home
Meanwhile, sources close to William and Middleton’s household confided in Radar about the established rules and boundaries in the family. They revealed that the couple believes “titles and privilege do not excuse bad behavior.”
The Princess of Wales has taken an unconventional approach to parenting, backed by her husband: one that focuses less on privilege and achievement and more on consideration and emotional maturity.
Since Middleton was raised in a family where kindness, respect, and honesty were considered “central” to her life, she is now passing down the same lessons to her children. “Kate has certain rules about family life that she simply will not compromise on,” the insider said.
For the Princess, her children’s behavior and manners are “just as important as excelling at maths or sport.” According to the sources, the future king is “completely behind that approach.”
