The Families Stone, a sequel to 2005’s The Family Stone, is coming soon from Searchlight Pictures.

Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Jessica Parker, and more original cast members are returning.

The new film will follow the Stone family two decades after their matriarch Sybil’s death, as their father introduces them to his new love.

The Families Stone, a sequel to the modern holiday classic The Family Stone, is officially a go at Searchlight Pictures. While there is no official release date yet, the social media announcement for the film said “coming soon.”

Most of the original cast will return, including Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider, and Brian J. White. Thomas Bezucha will return as writer and director.

Absent, of course, is the late Diane Keaton, who played matriarch Sybil Stone. Keaton died from pneumonia in October 2025 at the age of 79. In the original film, Sybil had gathered the Stone family for what would be their final Christmas together, as she dies near the end of the movie from terminal breast cancer.

The logline of the sequel, according to Variety, reads, “Twenty years after their mother’s passing, the Stone family reunites for Christmas only to face the season’s biggest surprise: their father has unexpectedly invited the woman he’s fallen in love with to meet the family.”

Rumblings of the sequel came shortly after Keaton’s death, with Bezucha sharing that he had been working on a follow-up to the 2005 film. When coming up with the story, he said he was motivated to “honor [Sybil] even more” in the wake of Keaton’s passing.

“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha told CNN in November 2025. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
