- Nick Reiner has been diagnosed with a "mental disability" and placed on suicide watch after being charged with his parents' murders, a police source told PEOPLE.

- His processing at the jail was "expedited" when he arrived on Monday, the source said.

- The source also said Reiner is allowed to communicate only with his lawyers and jail staff.

New details are emerging about Nick Reiner's status in jail.

Reiner was arrested on Dec. 13 in connection to the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, and was charged with two counts of first-degree murder on Tuesday. Now, a police source has provided more information about his experience at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.

Reiner, 32, is on suicide watch and being held in solitary confinement while wearing a suicide prevention smock at all times, the source told PEOPLE.

"While he is on suicide watch, a supervisor checks on him every 15 minutes to ensure his safety," the source said. "He is currently struggling with mental health concerns, but he has not attempted self-harm. He remains alone in his cell and communicates very little."

Reiner has publicly addressed his struggles with addiction in the past, co-writing a film inspired by his battle, *Being Charlie*, that his father directed. Now, medical personnel have diagnosed him with a "mental disability," which has led to his being placed on suicide watch, the police source said.

"When he arrived at the jail on Dec. 15, mental health staff evaluated him and determined he was at risk," the source told PEOPLE. "He will remain on suicide watch until a doctor clears him, which could take a long time depending on his mental health."

After missing a planned court appearance on Tuesday due to a lack of medical clearance, Reiner made his first public appearance the next day. "He was medically evaluated and cleared by the medical staff, including the on-site doctor, and deemed competent enough to attend court on Wednesday," the source said. "If he were not in the right mental state, he would not have been allowed to go. That means he is considered mentally sound enough to attend proceedings."

The source added that Reiner does not have phone privileges and no visitors are allowed to see him at this time. They also noted that he was processed unusually quickly when he arrived at the jail.

"This process usually takes about 24 hours for an inmate,” the police source told PEOPLE. "In this case, it was expedited because it's a high-profile case and they wanted it done as quickly as possible. Less than four hours is extremely fast here."

Reiner has no contact with anyone aside from his lawyers and jail personnel. "This is important so that no one compromises this high-profile case, and so that no civilian or inmate can ask him questions," the source said.

Reiner's arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2026.
