Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash were one of Nashville’s greatest love stories.
As the embodiment of soulmates, often mentioned in pop culture alongside of Bonnie and Clyde or Burton and Taylor, Johnny and June had a connection from their first meeting. In 1968, Johnny proposed to June during a live performance, and they married one week later in Kentucky. They welcomed their only child, son John Carter Cash, in 1970, and remained together until June’s death in May 2003 at age 73. Four months after her death, Johnny died at age 71 on Sept. 12.
The two frequently performed together on tour, and June received co-billing on four of Johnny’s studio albums, with countless collaborations recorded throughout his extensive discography.
“You still fascinate and inspire me. You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. We got old and got used to each other,” wrote Johnny to his wife in a 1994 letter for her birthday, per Rolling Stone. “Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit ... But once in a while, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met.”

According to the 2002 biography of the Carters, Will You Miss Me When I’m Gone?, Johnny’s first words to June were, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash and I’m going to marry you someday.”

Their relationship was not without its trials and tribulations, however. The 2024 documentary June detailed how Johnny’s addictions in the ‘80s put a strain on their marriage.
“Maybe a lot of times they did buy into their own myth. For better or for worse!” said Johnny’s daughter Rosanne in the documentary. “Maybe that kept them going at a time when they could’ve broken up. It’s like, well, we have this thing together that’s bigger than us.”

In the last decade of their lives, the couple limited their public appearances. The 1992 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and his wife arrived as guests at the ceremony, which honored Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, the Allman Brothers Band and more.

Five months before June’s death, the couple took portraits at their home for CMT Inside Fame.
Rosanne shared in June that Johnny struggled after his life partner’s death. “All of us children were holding our breaths like, ‘He’s not gonna last long without her,’” she said. “And he didn’t. He lasted four months.”
