The Stone family is returning to the big screen.
More than two decades after The Family Stone premiered in theaters in 2005, a sequel has officially been greenlit, Searchlight Pictures announced on Saturday, Sept. 12.
“The Families Stone. Coming Soon,” the production company captioned an Instagram post, sharing the title of the forthcoming sequel.
According to Searchlight Pictures, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider and Brian J. White are all set to reprise their roles.
Diane Keaton, who starred in the original film, will not return following her death from pneumonia at age 79 in October 2025.
The Family Stone follows Parker’s character, a businesswoman who struggles to fit in with her boyfriend’s family for Christmas, and the drama that ensues. (The Sex and the City alum was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her performance in the movie.)
According to Deadline, The Families Stone picks up 20 years after the death of Keaton’s character, matriarch Sybil Stone, which occurred in the first film.

After Keaton’s death, The Family Stone writer and director Thomas Bezucha announced that he was planning a sequel to the movie.
“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha, 62, told CNN. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”
Speaking with Entertainment Tonightin July, Wilson, 54, teased, “I read the script, and it’s really funny, and it’s so nice that everybody wants to work together again.”
Mulroney, meanwhile, shared on The Tangle podcast months earlier, “Everyone’s up for returning. I can be on record.”
The Families Stone does not yet have a release date.
