This day in history: Happy birthday, Helen Mirren!

Helen Mirren, born Ilynea Lydia Petrovna Mironoff in London in 1945, of a Russian father and a Scottish mother.  Mirren joined Britain’s National Youth Theatre when she was 18 and the Royal Shakespeare Company a year later. By age 20, Mirren got the role of Cleopatra in the 1965 production of Antony and Cleopatra.

After this role, Mirren was invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and played many others that were more passionate, such as Castiza in The Revenger’s Tragedy, Cressida in Troilus and Cressida, and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth.

“I loved the power and the passion of that role, and of course, it’s always good to be Queen,” she wrote in her 2008 memoir In the Frame. “This was the role that launched my career,” she added.

Mirren starred in many movies and received many awards, including an Academy, three Golden Globe, four BAFTA, and five Emmy Awards. Her first Academy Award was for her role of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film The Queen.

In her speech, Mirren said, “You know my sister told me that all kids love to get gold stars and this is the biggest and the best gold star that I have ever had in my life.”

One of the roles a lot of us know her for is detective Jane Tennison in the series Prime Suspect, which ran from 1991-2006.

In an interview, Mirren talked about detective tension, she said, “What I liked most was that she is slightly unpleasant in her obsessive pursuit of her own career. You don’t see that on the screen in women. Women are always self-effacing and self-denying. There’s a term that enrages me, and I always used to swear that I’d never play characters described that way. The term is “lowq231ng-suffering.” As in “the long-suffering wife of…” Those loathsome long-suffering parts. And then very often I’d find myself in just such a role.”

After dating for more than 10 years, Mirren and Taylor Hackford got married in 1997.

Mirren was named the recipient of the 2026 Cecil B, DeMille Award at the Golden Globes for her contribution to the film and entertainment industries.  “The DeMille Award was described to me as a career recognition, but I prefer to think of it as a life lived, a life survived, a life enjoyed, a life sweated, and a life carried on hopefully.” she said in her acceptance speech.
