Emily Brontë’s iconic 1847 gothic romance tale returns to the big screen in Wuthering Heights, a bold new adaptation written and directed by Emerald Fennell. Best known for Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, Fennell takes on the novel with Margot Robbie starring as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff. The film opened on February 13, making it the perfect Valentine’s Day release—if your idea of romance skews dark and obsessive.

Fennell has described the project as deeply personal, explaining at the BrontĆ« Women’s Writing Festival that she wanted the film to capture the visceral reaction she had when she first read the novel as a teenager. ā€œI wanted to make something that made me feel like I felt when I first read it, which means that it’s an emotional response to something,ā€ she said. ā€œIt’s, like, primal, sexual.ā€ She also called Brontë’s story ā€œcompletely singular,ā€ adding, ā€œIt’s so hot. It’s so horrible. It’s so devastating.ā€

The film follows the destructive, all-consuming relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff across the Yorkshire moors, and leans into the novel’s emotional extremity. Fennell has said she worked to retain much of Brontë’s original dialogue, noting, ā€œI was really determined to preserve as much of her dialogue [as possible] because her dialogue is the best dialogue ever.ā€

Robbie and Elordi’s collaboration has been central to the film’s intensity. In a January 2026 interview with TODAY, Robbie revealed that Fennell pushed the actors to fully inhabit their characters’ connection. ā€œEmerald went into our dressing rooms and made a shrine of each other in our dressing rooms,ā€ Robbie said. ā€œIt was so unhinged and so hilarious.ā€ Elordi called the move ā€œfunnyā€ and ā€œfantastic,ā€ while Robbie added that it set the standard for how seriously they approached the romance: ā€œAnd then we just kept trying to meet the bar [she’d set].ā€

The director has also spoken openly about the risks of adapting such a beloved text. ā€œIt’s very personal material for everyone,ā€ Fennell said at the BrontĆ« Women’s Writing Festival. ā€œIt’s very illicit. The way we relate to the characters is very private, I think.ā€ That sense of danger and intimacy carries through the film’s aesthetic as well, which blends classical elements with modern flourishes, including original music by Charli XCX.
